The math
How your overall band is calculated
1. Average the four modules
IELTS adds your Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking bands and divides by four. All four count equally.
2. Round to the nearest half
The average is rounded to the nearest whole or half band. An average of 6.1 becomes 6.0; an average of 6.4 becomes 6.5.
3. Quarters round up
Exactly .25 rounds up to .5, and exactly .75 rounds up to the next whole band. So 6.25 becomes 6.5, and 6.75 becomes 7.0.

Notice how Writing is the module most often holding the overall band down — it's the one candidates most underestimate.
